Today I received an interesting email from a colleague photographer who struggles to live by her art. I think my answer may interest more than one and I would like to share with the rest of the comunity of pros in the making.
Here’s what she writes;
“Hi Laurent
Unfortunately I can not live from my photography! I am mostly in picture of architecture and landscape.
My website is not top because I did it myself on iWeb lack of funds but I will soon do so again by a pro so it becomes more serious. If want to go take a look: www.archi-nature.com
I hope we will have the opportunity to meet! In the meantime, best regards,
N. ”
And Here is my answer:
Hi N,
Yes indeed not easy to live from photography. Here are some tips you to go forward.
1 – Drop Iweb right away (iWeb does not correctly reference the site and images on google (plus it is no longer supported in OSX Lion)) Interest yourself into www.WordPress.org to you (free) c ‘ CMS is a Content management software with which you can work on your site in real time very easily . If you look at mine, I did everything myself. www.laurentegli.com.
2 – Get to know www.photoshelter.com its a system where you can make you a site in a few clicks at a very reasonable cost and that allows you to sell your photos yourself, have explanatory pages, a portfolio, manage downloads and many other things. and especially they have a section with books in pdf on how to maximize and increase your income photographic what managers are looking publications or how improved your visibility on the internet.
3 – For you website general look www.graphpaperpress.com layouts (style outside of your site) of web sites for photographers in wordpress. Their templates are compatible with PhotoShelter which means that the look of your site is the same for wordpress to PhotoShelter. If you are running a little on my site you will notice that the portfolio and the blog are two different addresses but the look of the site remains the same. Very useful to have a look very professional!
And finally advice No:4 (but this should be the No. 1; Follow business courses, by books, remotely on the web, but 90% of photographers have no idea how to write a quote into an accounting , make a budget. Press the trigger is 10% of the work, the rest is buisiness. How to talk to a client to get a mandate, how to maximize existing customers rather than seek new ones. Here all themes which you must pass 90% of your time. The decisions of the client to hire you never fall as much of your qualities as a photographer of your ability to build confidence that their project will end in good conditions and on budget. It is interesting to show that you have thought of everything before them and there is always time for discounts later when the work is going well. A little trick in passing that gave me a charge of marketing of a major cosmetics, do not be afraid to ask your customers what their budget? It sounds simple but it is better to give a quote to cover their budget with appropriate means and then to propose improvements that offer them a huge budget in which they will cut against their will.
I hope this information will help you see more clearly in your priorities.Feel free to comment, twitter, or simply clicking I like to pass this article.
“The eye of the photographer must know how to attract all the others”
I had , today , the pleasent surprise to receive this citation from my daughter Célia. As she was taking pictures for her argentic photography class (yes they still learn that) this simple phrase came to her. She was able to express in a few words what I’ve been trying to do all those years. I this she well deserves to be mentioned on the web as the inventor of this phrase (yes I checked). Does any one know any more citations involving photographers? Well this one is going on my wall!

Vista Salinas. Here is a Panorama that had been sleeping too long in the boxes. Since the moment it was shot in 2009 on the sides of the east of Lanzarote island salt ponds, I knew that this picture would end up in black and white. The arid volcanic soil and the non-existant vegetation in this south part of the national parc reinforces the lunar feel of this landscape. Caught between the land and the sea, the salt ponds sometimes dried sometimes floded look like a oversized human-made patchwork.
This photograph is available in the Panoramas of the world collection in large format Fine Art prints.
